If the nest has been successful in rearing new queens they will leave the nest to mate and then go on to hibernate somewhere in the soil ready to emerge the following spring to start their own colonies. Nests normally survive for about two to three months before the original queen dies.

Females from these eggs go on to build their own nests.

How long do tree bees nest for. However if the nest is successful this can cause multiple problems if you find one in your home. After 9 days of feeding larvae become pupa then adults. Commonly they establish a nest in bird boxes or in parts of buildings and may cause concern.
After 3 days the eggs hatch and become larvae feeding on honey and pollen. After this time the original queen her workers and her sons will die. Normally nests live for about 2 or 3 months.
One exception is when the bees infest inside a knot hole or crack inside the trunk of the tree. In a recently established hive the amount of comb and brood immature bees will be small. After two to three months young queens and males will be produced and the colony size will start to decline.
Each female lays three to 10 eggs before dying. There are some exceptions to this rule. Igniting the hive causes all bees inside to escape from it.
It s rare for them to leave after a few days because they have usually started building hive material. The colony grows and can remain active for five months during which time males and young unmated queens leave the nest. Once mated the new queens feed to fatten themselves up for hibernation.
The hives can house up to 3 bees at a time. Six weeks after the queen has established her nest workers emerge and begin foraging for the rest of the colony. Here scouts locate two potential nest sites one with a large opening and one with a more desirable small opening.
Each scout bee then returns to the swarm and performs a waggle dance for her site but the scout from the superior right tree performs more waggle dance circuits than the scout from the left tree. The size of colonies vary between species. Bees can enter a beehive from the top bottom or sides when unobstructed by any block.
This cycle from egg to adult takes 21 days. They forage on natives such as pohutukawa ti tree and native mistletoe but have also adapted to introduced flowers including kiwifruit and ragwort. Solitary bees with one family living in a nest in contrast to a honey bee hive.
Some can produce several hundred workers whilst others only get to around fifty. Bees fly into the nest at night during rain and after pollinating. When bees are just resting they usually take flight within 24 hours.
Some traits of tree bees can be a cause of concern but generally there is nothing to worry about.
